"Mother's Childhood"

woodcut This is another from the collection of images I've made of my family. This is my mother (the little girl in front) with her mother sister and brothers in front of the home in which they grew up in Beaver City, Nebraska.

But once more, as I worked on the piece I began to see so many families, so many brothers and sisters, mothers and children. I began to see this as a quiet homage to old homes, stone porches, lattice windows, frock dresses.

The artwork began to speak back to me about dressing up and standing in a line for photos. It spoke of large shade trees in the yard and iron fences. It became a picture of our American memories.
